If you’re lucky you’ll see some great horned owls in some of the oaks.

There are plenty of eye pleasing views and acres upon acres of gardens and ponds.  Just watch out for the alligators sunbathing along the ponds!

They have animals including otters, deer, a bear, mountain lion, bison, bobcats and more. Watch out for snakes in trees and make sure to wear bug spray during mosquito season!

Interesting things to see:

  • Interactive exhibits at the Visitors Center telling the story of settlement and survival in the 17th century.

  • Replicas of the The Adventure trading ship, cannons, earthen fortifications and early settlements servants quarters.

  • The Legare House and The Horry Plantation ruins

  • The Animal Forest Zoo features bison, puma, bobcats, black bears, elk, otters and native birds.

This is by far one of the best places to visit in the low country of South Carolina and is one of the richest assets they have in the State Park Arsenal.  You will not regret planning a trip to visit and yes, its a place you must visit while you are visiting or living in the Carolinas.

Historic State Park, Charleston SC

Charles Towne Landing is in the upper echelon of South Carolina State Parks.  Located minutes from downtown Charleston, this is as good as it gets for a weekend family getaway.
Step back in time historic land mark is the birth place of America and South Carolina.
Rich in history, as this was the first landing in South Carolina, the park welcomes you to 80 acres of beautiful gardens, remarkable marshes, stunning moss covered oak trees, ponds and even a zoo.

The main attraction is the 1.5 mile long self-guided Historic Trail. You can do a self-guided tour and learn a lot about the history there.

You can also go on a ship and learn about the waterways and how everything took place in the 1800's.

In addition you can bike, jog, walk with the stroller or the dog and relax on the many benches in the park.

Bring a lunch and take a break at the various picnic areas with tables.

The English gardens are so beautiful and great for bird watching.
