These two mountain ranges help make up the Appalachian Mountains, possibly the oldest range in the United States.
The region is also home to Mount Mitchell in North Carolina.
Rising 6,684 feet above sea level, Mount Mitchell is the tallest peak East of the Mississippi River (sounds like a One Tank Trip in the making!) as well as Sassafras Mountain, the highest point in South Carolina, rising at an elevation of around 3,560 ft.
The word Piedmont is French for "foot of the mountain", and often the Carolina Piedmont region is referred to as "the foothills".
It is also sometimes called a plateau because it is high and mostly flat. The rolling hills of the Piedmont region ranges in elevation from just 300 feet in the east to 1500 feet near the mountains.
Some of the best Camping Sites In North And South Carolina (for both Tent and RV) can be found in the Piedmont Region due to its large range and diverse settings.
The Sandhills (also known as The Midlands) is the sandy region of South Carolina that is located in the middle of the state just below the Piedmont and above the Coastal Plains.
The coastal plain is terraced with many ocean levels.
These ancient beach dunes are thought to be evidence of a former coastline when the ocean levels were higher, or the land being lower.
Beach fossils are said to be found along the front edges.
The Coastal Plains in the Carolina's provide two distinct regions for camping options. Each with it's own unique beauty.
In the North the low flat land stretches from the sandy farmland of the Inner Coastal Plain to the North Carolina Outer Banks, a string of barrier islands separated from the mainland by inlets.
In the South this region is below the Sandhillls and is also relatively flat and is also very fertile.
Because the land is so fertile it is home to most of the farming and textile industry in South Carolina.
